Kowalski says the Lions "like (Smith) and Aaron Brown in backup roles," and both should be on the 2010 roster. Maurice Morris finished the year fairly strong, but will be on the bubble.

Smith just had surgery a couple weeks ago to repair his torn ACL. Once he gets off crutches, he'll go back under the knife. Mayhew admitted that Smith was playing with two injured shoulders for most of the season and they need to make an addition at running back. Smith can't be counted on to be ready for Week 1 of next season.
